What did you do before Stern?
Business Development at a cinema chain
What was your role over the summer?
My team served as the internal marketing strategy group. My role was to assist in all global marketing campaigns of the company, to ensure consistent messaging, high engagement, and relevance across different channels with a focus in the domestic U.S. campaigns.
What were your responsibilities?
I worked on a variety of marketing campaigns, all at different stages- some on strategic planning, some on customer insight result analysis, and some on operational fixes. I typically worked on 5-10 campaigns at a time. I was also assigned an intern project, which was beta launching the company’s new email marketing platform.
What was a typical day like?
9:00 – 9:15 arrive, catch up with emails while eating breakfast
9:45 – 12:00 attend a variety of meetings regarding the projects I’m currently on*
12:00 – 1:00 lunch time!
1:00 – 3:00 more meetings*
3:00 – 6:30 time to work on my assignments, including research, slides, campaign build outs and projections
Weekly Events:
2:00 – 2:30 Fridays, weekly one-on-one with my manager
3:00 – 4:00 Fridays, weekly meeting with engineering team
4:00 – 4:30 Fridays, weekly team meeting
*Note, while I’m not in meetings constantly during these times ranges, my breaks are few and far between, typically maximum 20mins.
What experiences (if any) helped prepare you for this internship?
I was very nervous when first starting this role, as I have never worked at a tech company before and have a pretty non-technical background. I was afraid that there would be a lot of stuff that would just go straight over my head. However, I soon found that to be the opposite. My previous experiences working in marketing, BD, and at a non-US company all came in handy throughout the summer, and I found myself being able to translate a lot of stuff I had done over to what I was doing with my internship.
What was the best advice you received during the recruiting process?
Keep calm, don’t panic, and maintain an open mind. Internship and interview offers will eventually come (and great ones too).
What was your most memorable experience over the summer?
As part of my intern project, I was in charge of beta launching Spotify’s new marketing tool platform, which included working with our engineers as well as global marketing teams to create conduct cross-functional marketing tool training sessions. As part of these sessions, my team and I had the opportunity to travel to HQ in Stockholm, Sweden for a week and launch our program there.
